Søndagsfilmen: Pope Benedict XVI Christ Above All

Hver søndag vil vi sende en film eller dokumentar om Kirken. Denne uken viser vi dokumentaren"Pope Benedict XVI Christ Above All".

His name was Joseph Ratzinger, later Cardinal, and finally Pope Benedict XVI.

He first came here as a brilliant young theologian in the 1960s, to work for the Second Vatican Council, and it was he who drafted one of the key speeches, interventions, at that council, calling for greater openness, clarity, and charity in the way the Church defended the great truths of our faith.

He came here in 1981, appointed by Pope John Paul II, John Paul the Great, to head the most senior of the departments in the Roman Curia, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

And he became a much loved and very familiar figure in Rome, walking every day across the great Piazza in front of St Peters, in his long black cassock. And in winter, a Blackberry, tilted sideways, and carrying his shabby briefcase with all his important papers in it, the right-hand man of the Great John Paul.

He came here in his mid-50s, fully expecting to retire when he turned 60. However, he was to remain here for the rest of his life, because he became Pope in 2005, and he was in the CDF for more than 20 years.
